Analysis of E.T and Independence Day

"E.T" and "Independence Day are both science fiction films. "E.T" stands for "Extra Teresstrial" which automatically makes the audience think that the film will be based around some sort of unnatural being, whereas the title of "Independence Day" is quite different as there is the element of mystery as the audience will not know what genre the film is from.

The cover of "E.T" shows that two worlds will collide and that a new friendship will be born. The cover of "Independence day" shows clearly that this is a science fiction film. There is a picture of the white house on fire which signifies that the government is being threatened and the spaceship above shows that there is a superior force.

The lighting in "E.T£ is low key, this is the opposite of "Independence Day" which has high key lighting. This is more naturalistic. Both films show the use of the dark colours at some point in the opening scene. The filler lights in "E.T" come from the UFO. The red flashing light before the phone call suggests that the call is a bout an element of danger in "Independence Day". In "E.T" the smoke enhances the effect of mystery/

The music in both films are quite different. In "E.T" there is synthesized sound which has an odd and eerie effect which is conventional for a science fiction film. The music is also slow paced. The music in "Independence Day" somewhat reflects what the film is about by using the lyrics "It's the end of the world as we know it." The sound in "E.T" is magical and low tuned noises. The steady pace also keeps suspense. The beeping sound effects are usually associated with spaceships, this is conventional. There is diagetic sound in the form of dialogue in "Independence Day." The dialogue reveals the content of the film. The tone of voice changes throughout the opening sequence. The exaggerated sound at the beginning reinforces the titles.

In "E.T" we are introduced the something that is obviously not human, whereas in "Independence Day" we are introduced to four men. The protagonist is unclear so far, however, in "E.T" the extreme close-up of the hand leads the audience to believe that the film will be based on E.T himself. Also, the mist in "E.T" distorts our image of him which gives the film an element of mystery. The characters in "Independence Day" are in the military which shows there is some sort of authority involved. E.T seems to be quite peaceful and seems to have a peaceful nature as the wold rabbit doesn't run away. This connotes a sense of innocence. The heart indicates a caring nature, however. the characters in "Independence Day" come across as being both clumsy and intelligent. The first character we see is wearing glasses which is stereotypically associated with intelligence. The Army officers in this film also represent heroes as we begin to understand that there will be a battle between good and evil.

The establishing shot of the sky in "E.T" shows that the film will have something to do with space. Space is usually one convention of a science fiction film. The long shot of the moon in "Independence Day" reflects the man on the moon and the American flag signifies that America always seems to save the day, this is the audiences expectations. The point of view show in "E.T" makes the audience feel as if they are involved. The high angled shot makes E.T look small and vulnerable. In "Independence Day" the forced perspective of the spaceship makes it look surreal and powerful. The zoom out of the American flag could also signify that America could be vulnerable.

Cold Harbour Woods- Film Opening

My group: Oyin, Chauntelle, Dominique & myself.

Narrative 1.

3 girls, 1 killer.

3 girls are joking around in the woods. We see this beginning bit from the killers point of view. One girl decides to go in search of a toilet, whilst she is searching for one she hears a very loud scream. She walks towards where the scream came from and sees a silhouette acting violently. She runs back to her friends who all go out to investigate but when they arrive to where the scream came from, the silhouette has disappeared. The girls then immediately start running away. The title comes up with penetrating non-diagetic sound.

Narrative 2.

3 female friends are all in a cabin talking about boys and gossiping. One girls sees the shape of a person pass the window. She informs her friends but they do not listen to her and carry on talking. Suddenly a door slams somewhere upstairs. Girls go upstairs and open the door that was previously slammed. The girls see the window open, the camera slowly follows a trail of blood from the window to the floor.

Film opening One

Our first film opening was filmed in Crystal Palace Park.
Our story was about a young girl who was being bullied terribly and as a result went spiraling into psychotic depression.

Starting again!

As we were having problems with our previous film opening, as a group, we decided to start again. This time we chose to do a romance. It is a typical "boy meets girl" film opening. We decided to film it in the school as the characters are students. Many of the shots are of me daydreaming. There is a scene where the boy and girl interact. In this scene both are walking towards each other but not paying attention to where they are going. They both bump into each other and the girl drops her books. The boy helps her to pick them up and there is an eye connection. Lisa and Owen are the names of the characters.

Voice Over

Hi, I'm Lisa, I'm 16 years old and I go to Alberto Hight, currently studying for my GCSE's in English, art and music. I only recently joined the school so I don't really have a social group to fit in with. Most of the time, I spend my school life doing extra school work and gazing at this one boy. Owen! He's just so perfect, always smiling. He's so hard working. He's really helpful as well, I'll never forget the time he helped me with my books. OMG! It was just after class and I, clumsy as ever, bumped into him and dropped my books. I mean, dropped them, like all over the floor near his feet. Then he bent down and picked them up for me and boy was there an eye connection. He noticed me, he looked right into my eyes and smiled. He's so fit. Adorable. Cute. Funny. I love him!

Title Ideas

We came up with some ideas for the title.

  • Perfection
  • My kind of guy
  • He's the one
  • Roses are red
  • Never the one

Mood Board

Synopsis

Our main character Lisa begins a new school and doesn't seem to fit in. She then locks eyes with Owen, the school "hunk" who she instantly falls in love with. At first Owen doesn't seem to notice her, but things soon change.

Lisa soon finds herself a group of friends, but when her closest friend Katie tells Lisa 0f her undying love for Owen, things begin to turn sour. Lisa is shocked at this sudden confession but won't give her love for Owen up, especially as the talent show is around the corner.

At the talent show, Owen dedicates a song to Lisa, and at the end of the song he asks her out. Outraged by what she has just witnessed, Katie jumps up and shouts "NO!" and slaps Lisa. There is then a huge fight between Lisa and Katie.

After a while, Lisa realises that her friendship with Katie is more important than Owen, and tells him that she would rather stay friends.

Character Profile- Owen

Owen seems like the typical teenage boy. Owen doesn't usually take any notice of Lisa and doesn't know she exists until she drops her books. Owen doesn't seem to be particularly phased by this and after the incident he carries on as usual. In this sense, he is quite similar to Josh Bryant from The Princess Diaries and Troy Bolton in High School Musical.

Character Profile- Lisa

Lisa comes across as quite socially awkward or as being an outcast in society. She is a new student at Alberto High and hasn't made any friends. Lisa is the typical geek and like every girl her age she has a crush on the most popular boy in school, Owen. She is similar to Gabrielle Montez from High school musical or Mia from The Princess Diaries.

Creating our title "He's the one"

Here, we discussed what colour font and effect to use for out opening title.

We decided to make the title pink as it is seen as a stereotypical girls colour.

Music

We found the perfect piece of music for out opening sequence, so we emailed the artist.
This is a copy of the email:

Hello,
I'm Dominique, a media student from Harris Academy in the UK currently in the process of completing my coursework for my AS level qualification.
This requires me to produce a film opening. For the film opening I require a piece of music to go with my work, matching the genre etc. I have found the perfect piece.

Cutting to the chase, would it be possible for me to use your guitar piece called "The Clap"?
I am not allowed to include any copyrighted material in my coursework unless given permission to do so. I do not intend to use the piece to gain any sort of income/profit or monetary advantage.

This piece of music fits perfectly with my coursework and I would greatly appreciate being able to use it in my work. All credits go to Steve Howe for the music.

I hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks.
Dominique Alexander.

He's The One- Rough Cut

He's The One- Rough Cut from Jemma Goulds on Vimeo.

Feedback on Rough Cut:

"Really good. The soundtrack went with the voice over because it was jolly. The echo could be heard during the voice over." -Josephine

"Instead of walking down the stairs, there should be a group of people laughing together and then Lisa walking alone." -Myrin

"Music and titles worked well together. Opening credits were too long compared to the film." -Sophie

"The target audience was made apparent. You could have included speech bubbles for when she said "OMG" The camera angles were excellent but re-do the voice over and lower the music during some points." -Miss Goulds

"There we great chemistry between the characters." -Joanna

Evaluation- Question 1- In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms or conventions of real media products?

Our opening sequence conforms to the stereotypical romance films.

Image 1

Image one is of our production Logo. It is of a woman who is having lipstick drawn on her face. This first image helps the audience to establish what the genre of the film is and who the target audience will be.

Image 2 & 3

The next two images are of the credits. The credits come up over images that connect to the genre and the theme of the film. The typography of the credits and pink and move in time with the music.

Image 4

This image shows our main character Lisa hard at work. Our target audience would be able to relate to her, as we are aiming for our film to appeal to a female audience that are quite work focused.

Image 5

This image shows Lisa day dreaming about Owen. Many teenage girls would be able to relate to this as they have had at least a few moments similar to this.

Image 6

This shows Lisa being so close to Owen yet so far. It exaggerates the fact that all she can do is adore him from afar.

Image 7

This clearly shows Lisa's loneliness as she is walking down a walkway by herself.

Image 8

This is the moment that Lisa and Own actually interact. The body language shows that she is quite taken aback by this sudden interaction, and the sudden realisation that Owen has finally locked his eyes with hers.

Image 9

This is of our title, which comes at the end of the opening sequence to help gather suspense as there is a break between the action. It is in the same font as the credits to help continue the theme.

Evaluation- Question 2- How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Evaluation- Question 6- What have you learn about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Priemer pro is fairly straightforward and easy to use as it doesn't have any restrictions on the programmes, it also allows us to export to other programmes quickly and efficiently.

A disadvantage to premier pro is that it can take a while to load at times, so patience is needed when it is used.

We used Vimeo instead of YouTube as Vimeo posesses a higher quality and is not as restricted as YouTube, However, both websites take the same amount of time to upload a video.

We also used facebook as our taget audience would use it.

Wednesday 3 March 2010

Evaluation- Question 7- Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

AP preliminary task from Jemma Goulds on Vimeo.

In the short period of time between both finished products, I learnt many editing techniques and also learnt how to use Premier Pro efficiently. I also found out how to do voice overs to the best of my ability and how to import audio tracks.
